This 40-page softcover book explores a masterwork by Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted through historic images, plans, and contemporary views. Located in Waltham, Massachusetts, the house and its gently rolling landscape blend seamlessly together, making Stonehurst the pinnacle of Richardson’s country house designs. Substantially completed by the time of Richardson’s death in April 1886, the house was described by Richardson biographer Mariana Griswold van Rensselear as “so appropriate to its surroundings that it seems to have grown out of them by some process of nature,” – a foreshadowing of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright that emerged at the turn of the 20th century. The text includes chapters on the Paine family, Richardson, the commission and building process, the landscape, and the breathtaking interiors. (Author: Ann Clifford and Thomas M. Paine - Published: 2007)
